Right to repair: What obligations does your business have?

What is the Directive EU 2024/1799?

Consumer’s “right-to-repair” is laid out in Directive EU 2024/1799. This regulation is an important enabler of the circular economy, aiming to keep products in use for longer with accessible repair services.

It creates obligations for manufacturers and others to repair goods beyond warranty, creates transparency for consumers, and sets up a new EU platform for repair that connects customers with repair services.

Who does Right-to-repair apply to?

Directive EU 2024/1799 applies to both large and small business in the EU. The requirements apply primarily to manufacturers. However, responsibilities can extend to importers and distributors when the original manufacturer is located outside the EU.

The obligations apply to specific product types, such as:

  • Washing machines and dryers

  • Dishwashers

  • Refridgerators

  • Electronic displays

  • Vaccums

  • Mobile phones

How does Right-to-repair impact your business?

Directive 2024/1799 requires manufacturers to repair goods where possible for reasonable prices and at a reasonable speed. Importantly, this repair obligation extends beyond the original warranty period. In addition, businesses must provide clear structured information to customers on how to exercise this right.

Concretely, businesses will need to invest in the right capabilities to provide the repair services before the regulation is enforced in July 2026.
